Where to Launch Your Kayak on theSuwannee River in Old Town, Florida
If you've ever wanted to paddle a river that feels genuinely wild, cypress trees leaning over tea-colored water, turtles sliding off logs, the occasional sturgeon leaping clean out of the current, the Suwannee River near Old Town is about as good as Florida gets. And the best news for anyone planning a trip: you can put in just steps from the water.
We're Suwannee Gables, a family-owned riverfront motel in Old Town, Florida, and kayaking is hands-down the thing our guests come back raving about. So here's our local guide to kayaking the Suwannee River around Old Town; where to launch, where to paddle, and how to do it safely.
The Easiest Place To Start: Right From The River
Let's get the obvious one out of the way. If you're staying with us at Suwannee Gables, you don't have to load a kayak onto a car at all, you're already on the river.
We rent kayaks on-site, and our dock puts you straight onto the water. For a lot of guests, that's the whole appeal: coffee on the porch, kayaking by mid-morning, back before lunch.
But whether you launch from our dock or bring your own boat, here are the best public launch points nearby.
Where to launch your kayak on the Suwannee River near Old Town
Hinton Park Boat Ramp (Old Town) — the closest public launch
Right in Old Town on the north side of the river, Hinton Park has a wide boat ramp with grassy areas on either side that are perfect for hand-launching a kayak. From the ramp it's a short 400-foot run down to the main river. The park is free and includes parking, restrooms, picnic tables and grills, a playground, and a fishing pier, plus a floating dock leading to the water. For most Old Town paddlers, this is the go-to.
Fanning Springs State Park — spring-to-river paddling
Just across the bridge, Fanning Springs offers river access from the park, so you can paddle a stretch of the Suwannee and cool off in a 72-degree spring in the same trip. There's a small park entry fee, and it's a beautiful, beginner-friendly place to start.
Otter Springs (Trenton) — a gentle spring run
About 15 minutes away, Otter Springs has an easy launch onto a roughly one-mile spring run that carries you down to the Suwannee. It's calm, scenic, and a great choice if you want a shorter, low-stress paddle.
Manatee Springs State Park — paddle into manatee country
Around 25–30 minutes downriver, Manatee Springs has the longest spring run feeding the Suwannee. You can launch near the outfitter, paddle the clear run, and glide right out into the river. In winter (November–April), this is manatee country — give the animals plenty of space and never approach or touch them.
Which paddle should you pick?
- First-timers / families with kids: Launch from our dock or Hinton Park and do a short out-and-back, paddling upstream first so the current helps you home.
- Spring lovers: Put in at Fanning or Otter Springs so you can mix river paddling with a cool spring swim.
- Wildlife seekers: Head to Manatee Springs in winter for the best odds of seeing manatees.
- Confident paddlers wanting a longer trip: The lower Suwannee has a whole network of launches; a local outfitter can arrange a shuttle so you paddle one-way with the current.

Suwannee River kayaking safety tips
The Suwannee is calm and forgiving most days, but a little know-how goes a long way:
- Paddle upstream first. Head against the gentle current at the start so the easier return trip is with the flow.
- Watch the weather. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast in Florida — start early and be off the water before storms roll in.
- Wear your life jacket. Always, and especially with kids.
- Watch for jumping sturgeon. Gulf sturgeon are famous on the Suwannee for launching out of the water, mostly in the warmer months. Stay alert, especially in open stretches.
- Bring sun protection. Despite the tree-lined banks, there's surprisingly little shade midstream — hat, sunscreen, and water are essential.
- Pack a dry bag. For your phone, keys, and a small first-aid kit.
- Mind the tide near the Gulf. The lower river becomes tidal as you approach the coast; check conditions if you're paddling far downstream.
