Old Florida Still Exists And It’s on the Suwannee River
We teamed up with @socialshepherdadventures to explore the wild, fossil-rich waters right outside our door, and honestly? We're still talking about it.
There's a version of Florida that has nothing to do with theme parks or beach resorts. No neon signs, no crowds, no parking fees. Just a wide, dark river winding through cypress trees, the sound of birds you can't quite name, and the very real possibility that a six-foot sturgeon is about to launch itself out of the water next to your kayak.
That's the Suwannee River. And if you haven't been, you're missing one of the state's best-kept secrets.
We recently had the pleasure of hosting the adventurous and endlessly curious @socialshepherdadventures, who used Suwannee Gables Motel as her basecamp while she explored the area. She came for the fossils. She stayed for the vibes. And she left with stories, memories, and experiences to share.
The River That Takes You Back in Time, Way Back
The stretch of the Suwannee River near Old Town isn't just beautiful. It's considered one of the most fossil-rich rivers in the entire southeastern United States. Spend a little time poking around the riverbanks and fossils start turning up faster than you'd expect.
We're talking Ice Age animals:
● Mammoths
● Giant ground sloths
● Ancient horses
● Shark teeth (yes, Florida used to be completely underwater — wild, right?)
Some fossil hunters have even pulled megalodon shark teeth and mastodon fossils from this very river system. History class never felt this hands-on!
Things to Do Suwannee River
Whether you're a die-hard fossil hunter or just someone who desperately needs to touch grass (and river water), this area has you covered:
● Fossil hunt along the Suwannee — no special equipment needed, just patience and a good eye
● Kayak the river — we've got kayak access right from the property
● Swim at Manatee Springs State Park — crystal-clear springs, manatees (seasonally), the works
● Visit Fanning Springs State Park — another gem just down the road
● Go antiquing in Old Town — you never know what you'll find
● Turn your phone off for a bit — trust us on this one
Why Chose Suwannee Gables
As @socialshepherdadventures put it, Suwannee Gables is "a little basecamp,"and we couldn't have said it better ourselves.
Sitting right on the river, we offer:
● Kayak access straight from the property
● A dock for fishing, stargazing, or just watching the water go by
● Grills for cooking out under the stars
● Dog-friendly rooms, because your adventure pup deserves a vacation too
It's not a resort. It's not a hotel with a gift shop and a lobby bar. It's a place to kick off your muddy boots, sleep well, and wake up ready to do it all again. More of a nature/camping-style stay, and for a trip like this, that's exactly the point.
Ready to Find Your Own Old Florida?
The Suwannee River isn't going to find you. You have to drive a little farther, get a little off the map, and be okay with the fact that the only thing on your agenda is whatever the river has in store.
Book your stay at Suwannee Gables Motel and use it as your basecamp for the adventure. We'll have a spot waiting for you — right on the river, right where it should be.
A huge thank you to @socialshepherdadventures for sharing her experience with her community and shining a light on this special corner of Florida. Go give her a follow — she finds the good stuff.
